Most lawns are not short of chemicals, they are short of roots. Deep roots find water in dry spells and crowd out weeds.
Three habits that work
- Mow high: never take off more than a third of the blade
- Water deeply once a week, not a little every day
- Feed in spring and autumn with a slow-release organic feed
| Season | Mowing height | Water |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | 1.5 in | Rarely needed |
| Summer | 2–2.5 in | 1 in a week |
| Autumn | 1.5 in | Rarely needed |
| Winter | Do not mow frozen grass | None |
In September, aerate and top-dress. It is the single best thing you can do for a lawn.
