Every bag of compost you buy is something your garden could have made for free. A good heap turns lawn clippings, leaves and kitchen peelings into dark, crumbly compost in nine to twelve months.
Greens and browns
| Greens (wet, fast) | Browns (dry, slow) |
|---|---|
| Grass clippings | Autumn leaves |
| Vegetable peelings | Cardboard and egg boxes |
| Soft prunings | Straw and wood chip |
| Coffee grounds | Shredded paper |
- Use three bays: filling, rotting and ready
- Mix roughly equal amounts of greens and browns
- Keep it as damp as a wrung-out sponge
- Turn it into the next bay every couple of months
If it smells, add browns. If nothing happens, add greens and water. Arjun, head gardener
On a Full Care plan, your gardener looks after the heap and spreads the compost on your beds each spring.
