Most roses are pruned in late winter, just as the buds start to swell. The aim is an open bush with three to five strong stems.
Our crew’s method
- Cut out dead, damaged and crossing stems
- Cut the strongest stems back by about a third
- Make each cut just above an outward-facing bud
- Feed and mulch straight after
Rambling roses are different: prune them straight after they flower in summer.
